Portland Universities
Universities in any city provide an important part of the regions economy: Human Capital. The knowledge and research that is fostered at universities is a key factor to the success of the region. Local universities often conduct their research in the area they are located, and share their results with local businesses, governments and citizens to further the advancement of the area. High caliber universities not only create human capital, they attract it. Big thinkers are most often located in a place where interaction and connections can be made to act as a catalyst to increase the efficiency of their research.
Portland, though not on the leading edge of cities in terms of quantity of high caliber universities, does act as the home for several graduate and research universities, who's participation in the community is integral to its success.

Portland State University
Founded in 1946 as the Vanport Extension Center to fulfill the need of higher education by returning soldier from WWII who wished to take advantage of the GI Bill. Boasting an enrollment of 29,000 students Portland State University has grown to be the largest public university in Oregon. With the motto "Let Knowledge serve the City" it is clear that Portland State is geared towards research that helps Portland grow and prosper. In recent years the university has added more doctoral programs in an effort to fulfill its mission to be a broad based research institution.

Though much smaller than Portland State University with only 3,600 students, the University of Portland has a large effect on the Portland community. It has nearly 13,000 alumni living in the city and an annual economic impact of $170million on the Portland economy. It was founded in 1901 by the Roman Catholics with Notre Dame being its sister school. The US News World Report ranked the University of Portland the 6th best college in the West. This is bolstered by the university being the top producer of Fulbright scholars in the nation.

Started in the town of Albany as the Albany Collegiate Institute in 1867, the college moved to Southwest Portland in 1938 and was renamed after the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1942. Similar in size to the University of Portland the school is known for its Law School and dedication to sustainability. It also has highly regarded programs in Biology, International Affairs, Psychology, Foreign Languages and Environmental Studies Currently, 100% of the university's electricity is supplied by wind power. The school was ranked by U.S News World Report as the 74th best liberal arts college in the nation.
