WEIRD!
Portland has gained a reputation for having a strange culture about it. Filled with local breweries, "hipsters" and an overall eclectic crowd, Portland has set itself as a city with a strange population.
Portland though, is more than that. They don't just trade microbrews for fixed gears, they also have a strong sense of the future and are planning accordingly. They are focusing on expanding their economy to the global level and trading important goods and services that are staples on the international market.
Sustainability has also been a large influence on Portland's ideal. It has worked closely with Germany to focus its future on sustainable actions. It already recycles more than any other city. Although it does have the longest average commute of any city in the nation, that commute is not going to change, in fact it will probably reduce as other regions commutes grow. Public Transportation and a strict Urban Growth boundary are focusing development in centers that will continue to grow and attract residents and companies in the future.
